Valley Hospital Medical Center Residency Personal Statement

Valley Hospital Medical Center has a strong commitment to training primary care physicians in Internal Medicine. Fellowships in various specialties are being planned for the future. The curriculum will include participation in each of the services listed below for the minimum time specified. Valley Hospital Medical Center adheres to the program requirements of the ACGME. Osteopathic principles and practices will be incorporated into the curriculum in each department.

The continuity ambulatory care experience will be satisfied by attending internal medicine clinic one-half day per week during the first year. The medicine continuity clinic is located on campus and incorporates some subspecialty clinics.

The Internal Medicine program has graduates going into fellowships, private practice and military service.

Some variation is possible within the ACGME/AOA guidelines and rotations may occasionally change. These are the rotation schedules currently being used. Rotations are 1 calendar month each.

Internal Medicine — PGY 1

  • Internal Medicine — 5 months (includes 2 months of Night Medicine)
  • Critical Care — 1 month
  • Pulmonary — 1 month
  • Cardiology — 1 month
  • Emergency Medicine — 1 month
  • Women's Health — 2 weeks
  • Psychiatry — 2 weeks
  • Palliative Care — 1 month
  • Neurology — 1 month
  • Continuity Clinic — One half day per week

Internal Medicine — PGY 2

  • Internal Medicine — 4 months
  • Critical Care — 1 month
  • Infectious Disease — 1 month
  • Nephrology — 1 month
  • Gastroenterology — 1 month
  • Endocrinology — 1 month
  • Ambulatory Elective — 2 months
  • Hematology/Oncology — 1 month
  • Continuity Clinic — One half day per week

Internal Medicine — PGY 3

  • Internal Medicine — 4 months
  • Critical Care — 1 month
  • Clinic — 1 month
  • Rheumatology — 1 month
  • Geriatrics — 1 month
  • Radiology — 1 month
  • Ambulatory Elective — 3 months
  • Continuity Clinic — Varies, minimum of one half day per week

Valley Hospital Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program is a three-year (36 month) osteopathic postgraduate program. The program is an AOA-approved residency with both DO and MD faculty attendings. Core rotations include Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and General Surgery.

Continuity of care of patients is the core of family medicine philosophy and is a top priority in our program. We provide the longitudinal hands-on training for our resident physicians in the Family Medicine Continuity Clinic.

Family Medicine Continuity Clinic

Rotations are one month each. Residents will have regularly assigned hours at the Family Medicine Continuity Clinic (FMCC) for the three (3) year duration of the Residency Program. The requirements for the FMCC are as follows:

  • PGY–1 one half day per week
  • PGY–2 two half days per week on average
  • PGY–3 three half days per week on average

  • FM Clinic — Avg. two to three half days per week
  • Urgent Care — Avg. one half day per week

  • Internal Medicine — 2 months

  • OB/GYN — 1 month
  • Urgent Care — 1 month
  • Geriatrics — 1 month
  • Elective — 2 months
  • Ophthalmology — 2 weeks

  • Sports Medicine — 1 month
  • FM Clinic — Avg. four to five half days per week
